Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the effects of using collaborative writing strategy on students’ writing ability and their anxiety at SMPN 2 Tembilahan. Type of the research was a quasi-experimental research. The subject of the research was the students at the eighthgrade at the school. In this research, two classes were involved, namely a class for an experimental class and a class for a control class. The sample consisted of 44 students that were taken from 138 students in the population. In collecting the data, the researcher used a test, a questionnaire, and an observation. In analyzing the data, the researcher used an independent sample t –test,a paired sample t-test, and the effect size formulas. Finally, the researcher found that the significant value was 0.000 and 0.000. It was smaller than p. value (0.005). It means that there was a significant effect of using collaborative writing strategy on the students’ writing ability and their anxiety based on the results of pretest and posttest in the experimental class. Besides, the value of eta square was 0.94 and 0.93. In other words, there was a significant effect of using collaborative writing strategy on the students’ writing ability and their anxiety for recount texts. The effect size was categorized as medium. In conclusion, collaborative writing strategy can be applied in teaching and learning process of writing at the school. Keywords: collaborative writing strategy, writing ability, students’ anxiety
