Abstract

This research is intended to know whether there is correlation between students’ reading interest and reading ability; vocabulary mastery and reading ability; students’ reading interest and vocabulary mastery toward reading ability at the eleventh grade students of Senior High School Tri Bhakti Pekanbaru in the academic year of 2018/2019. The design of this research is correlational design. The research was carried out at Senior High School Tri Bhakti Pekanbaru in the academic year of 2018/2019. The population was the eleventh grade students of Senior High School Tri Bhakti Pekanbaru. While the sample was 73 students of XI class taken by total sampling technique. The instruments to collect the data were questionnaire and test. Questionnaire is used to collect the students’ reading interest data while the test is used to collect the vocabulary mastery and reading ability data. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment formula to find the coefficient correlation and simple linear regression to find the significance and linearity of the variables. The result of the research showed that (1) there is positive correlation between students’ reading interest (X1) and reading ability (Y). The coefficient correlation is higher than r-table (0.659 > 0.312). (2) There is positive correlation between vocabulary mastery (X2) and reading ability (Y). The coefficient correlation is higher than r-table (0.715 > 0.312). (3) There is positive correlation between students’ reading interest and vocabulary mastery toward reading ability. The coefficient correlation is higher than r-table (0.599 > 0.312). The result of the research also showed that the contribution of students’ reading interest and vocabulary mastery toward reading ability is 35.88%. Therefore, the researcher concluded that there is positive significant correlation between students’ reading interest and vocabulary mastery toward reading ability at the the eleventh grade students of Senior High School Tri Bhakti Pekanbaru in the academic year of 2018/2019.
