Abstract

Based on the observation before, it was found that the second year students of MTs M Penyasawan got some problems in reading comprehension such as the students’ reading practice score is sometimes lower than the passing grade, the students have no self-confidence, the students do not persist in doing the task in learning English, the students keep asking to their friend instead of reading and trying to understand a text by themselves. The aim of this research was to find out the correlation between students’ intrinsic motivation and their reading comprehension. There were two variables used in this research, which were X variable (students’ intrinsic motivation) and Y (students’ reading comprehension). The subject of this research was second grade students at MTs M Penyasawan whereas the object of this research was the correlation between intrinsic motivation and reading comprehension. The population of this research was 45 students. In order to choose the sample, The researcher used the total sampling technique. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaire for intrinsic motivation and test for reading comprehension. The technique of data analysis the researcher used was Pearson Product Moment using SPSS 16.0 Version, it could be shown that: 1) the score of correlation coefficient is 0.818 > 0.40, it means that Ha is accepted which indicates that there is a significant correlation between students’ intrinsic motivation and reading comprehension. 2) The probability of score sig (2- tailed) is 0.000< 0.05. it means that Ha is accepted. In other words, there is a significant correlation between intrinsic motivation and reading comprehension. Keywords: correlation, Intrinsic Motivation, Reading Comprehension.
