Abstract

According to preliminary research, it was found that the second year students of state Junior High School 34 Pekanbaru had difficulties in writing narrative paragraph such as unable to use a good grammatical features, had lack of vocabulary, unable to express their ideas, unable to develop the ideas into the paragraph, unable to determine the sequence of events in narrative paragraph. This research aimed to find out the difference between using and without using Picture Sequence on students’ ability in writing narrative paragraph at the second year of State Junior High School 34 Pekanbaru. This research was a quasi-experimental research. Therefore, this research used two groups; control group and experimental group. The writer formulated the problems that would be answered by using the quantitative research. The subject of the research was the second year students of State Junior High School 34 Pekanbaru. The objects of this research were Picture Sequence and their ability in writing narrative paragraph. Sample of this research used Purposive Sampling. There were 83 students as sample from 203 students. To analyze the data, the writer used independent sample t-test by using SPSS 23 version by Julie Pallant. Based on the data analysis, the writer found that the result t-test formula was 3.161 with df = 81, it was found the level significance of 5% was 1.98 and level significance of 1% was 2.63. The data showed that tobserved was higher than ttable; 1.98 < 3.161 > 2.63, it means that Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected. It means that there was a significant difference between using and without using Picture Sequence on the students’ ability in writing narative paragraph at the second year of State Junior High School 34 Pekanbaru.
