Abstract

This research was correlational research with simple linear correlation design. The purpose of this research was to investigate the correlation between students’ motivation in learning English and their language learning strategies. The population of this research was the tenth grade students of Senior High School Pembangunan Bagan Sinembah which consisted of five classes with the total population was 190 students. The respondents of this research were 70 students taken by using Simple Random Sampling technique. In collecting the data, questionnaires were used to measure both students’ motivation in learning English and their language learning strategies of which it consisted of LLOS (Language Learning Orientation Scale) questionnaire for motivation and SILL (Strategy Inventory of Language Learning) questionnaire for language learning strategies. The data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) and calculated by using SPSS 22.0 program version in order to find out whether there was a significant correlation between students’ motivation in learning English and their language learning strategies or not. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the students’ motivation was categorized high with mean percentage 73.57%, the students’ language learning strategies was categorized sufficient with the mean percentage 57.47%, and there was a correlation between students’ motivation in learning English and their language learning strategies with the strength of association was medium showed by correlation coefficient (r) = 0.468. Therefore, it was concluded that null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. In other words, there was a significant correlation between students’ motivation in learning English and their language learning strategies at Senior High School Pembangunan Bagan Sinembah Rokan Hilir Regency.
