Abstract

Based on the preliminary research, it was found that some students at Islamic Junior High School Al-hidayah Kampar had problems in knowledge of vocabulary. The problems are seen in their inability to get the information from the text and inability in writing. This research is aimed to find out significant effect of using Dictogloss strategy on students’ knowledge of vocabulary and to know on which component of vocabulary knowledge does the use of Dictoglos strategy has the biggest effect. The design of this research was quasi experimental design. The subject of the research was the eighth-grade students at Islamic Junior High School Al-hidayah Kampar. Total population was 139 students. The total number of sample was 54 students, the sample was selected by using cluster random sampling technique. To get the data, the researcher gave pre-test and posttest, and then analyzed the data by using independent sample T-test calculated by SPSS 16.0 version. After analyzing the data, the result of sig. value is 0.000. It could be stated that 0.000<0.05. Then, the effect size is 0.37 categorized into high level. It means that Ha is accepted. In other words, there is a significant effect of using Dictogloss strategy on students’ knowledge of vocabulary. And the biggest effect is occurred on the fifth component of vocabulary knowledge that is identifying compound word where the effect size is 0.20 categorized into high level. Key word: Effect, Dictogloss strategy, Knowledge of vocabulary.
