Abstract

This research was conducted because some problems were faced by some students in learning English especially in reading comprehension which the problems were about not able to find the main idea of the text, not able to finding factual information of the text, not able to find the meaning of vocabulary of the text, not able to identify communicative purpose of the text, and not able to make inference of the text. The research was administered at SMAN 001 Kampar Utara. The subject was the second year students of State Senior High School 001 at Kampar Utara and the object of this research was the effect of using Thick and Thin Questions Strategy toward Reading Comprehension. The design of this research was Quasi Experimental Research. The number of population was 54 students consist of 2 classes. They were XI Science 1 consisted 27 students and XI science 2 consisted 27 students. Because the number of population was small, the writer used total population sampling, deciding XI science 1 as experimental class and XI science 2 as control class. In collecting the data, the writer used test. In analyzing data, the writer adopted independent sample t-test formula by using SPSS v.17. After analyzing the data, the writer found the result of independent sample t-test formula where t shows 4.425 at significant level 5% it shows 2.01, and at level 1% it shows 2.68. It can read 2.01<4.425>2.68. It means null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. In other words, there is a significant effect of using Thick and Thin Questions Strategy toward reading comprehension of the second year students at state Senior High School 001 Kampar Utara.
