Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the effective of using match mine strategy on students’ speaking ability and their motivation at Vocational High School YPLP-PGRI Bangkinang Kampar Regency.. Type of the research was quasiexperimental research. The subject of the research was students in grade ten at the school. In this research, two classes were involved, namely a class for experimental class and a class for control class. The sample consisted of 48 students that were taken from 53 students in the population. In collecting the data, the researcher used test, questionnaire, and observation. In analyzing the data, the researcher used independent sample t –test, paired sample t-test, and effect size formulas. Finally, the researcher found that the significant value was 0.000 and 0.000. It was smaller than p. value (0.005). It means that there was a significant effect of using match mine strategy on the students’ speaking ability and their motivation based on the results of pretest and posttest in the experimental class. Besides, the value of eta square was 0.78 and 0.91. In other words, there was a significant effect of using match mine strategy on the students’ speaking ability and their motivation for descriptive texts. The effect size is categorized as moderate effect. In conclusion, match mine strategy can be applied in teaching and learning process of speaking at the school.
