Abstract
This research was conducted based on the problems faced by the students in learning English especially in reading narrative text. The writer found that the students still had difficulties in comprehending the reading text. So, the writer was interested in carrying out the research about these problems. In this case, the researcher provided Group Work Technique to help students’ reading comprehension of narrative text. The objectives of the research were to find out the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text at the first year of State Senior High School 4 mandau taught by using Group Work Technique, to find out the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text at the first year of State Senior High School 4 Mandau without being taught by using Group Work Technique and to find out whether or not there is a significant difference and effect of using Group Work Technique on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text at the first year of State Senior High School 4 Mandau. In this research, the research design was an experimental research. The population of the research was the first year students of State Senior High School 4 Mandau in academic year 2016/2017. They consisted of ten classes. The total number of population was 325 students. The sample classes were 60 taken from two classes (30 students in each class). In this research, the writer used pre-test and post-test to collect the data to find out the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text. The technique of analyzing data was using an independent sample t-test and eta-square and it was eased by using SPSS 16 program. However, the type of this research was Quasi-Experiment. After analyzing the data, the writer found that there is a significant effect of using Group Work Technique on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text at Senior High School 4 Mandau, where to shows in the significance level of 5% was 2.01 and level of significance of 1% was 2.68. Then, null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, which was shown by 2.01<4.736>2.68. Keyword: Effect, Group Work Technique, Reading Comprehension
