Abstract

This research was conducted based on the problems faced by the students in learning English especially in reading narrative text. Based on the fact, the students had problems to comprehend the narrative text. The problems were: Some of the students still had the difficulties in finding out the main idea and factual information, had limited vocabulary, and had difficulties in identifying reference and inference in reading text. So, the writer was interested in carrying out the research about these problems. In this case, the writer provided Hot Seat strategy to improve the students’ reading comprehension in narrative text. The objective of this research was to find out whether there was or not significant effect of using Hot Seat strategy on students’ reading comprehension in narrative text at State Junior High School 23 Pekanbaru. The design of this research was a quasi-experimental design. The population of this research was the eighth grade students at State Junior High School 23 Pekanbaru. The sample was taken by using cluster random sampling. The sample was VIIIA as an experimental class, and VIIIB as control class. Thus, the number of sample from two classes was 80 students. To analyze the data, the writer adopted independent sample T-test formula by using SPSS 16.0 version. After analyzing the data by using SPSS computer program, it was found that tobtained was 7.643, which was greater than ttable at 5% (1.99) and 1% (2.64) level of significance. It can be concluded that 1.99 < 7.643 > 2.64. It means that null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. In conclusion, there is significant effect of using Hot Seat strategy to improve students’ reading comprehension in narrative text of the eighth grade at State Junior High School 23 Pekanbaru.
