Abstract

This research is entitled “The correlation between students’ self-anxiety and their speaking performance at the eleventh grade of Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru”. The research has 3 formulation of the problem; How is students’ self-anxiety at the eleventh grade of Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru, how the students’ speaking performance at the eleventh grade of Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru, and wether there is or no significant correlation between students’ self-anxiety and their speaking performance of Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. The objectives of the research was to find out the students’ self-anxiety at the eleventh grade of Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru, to find out students’ speaking performance at the eleventh grade of Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. In this research, the research design was a correlation research. The population of this research was the eleventh grade of students’ Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru in 2017/2018 academic year. It consisted of seven classes; the number of population was 144 students. The sample of this research was 30 students, as sample used Simple Random Sampling. In collected the data, researcher used two techniques there are questionnaire was used to determine anxiety, and test was used to determine their speaking performance. The technique analyzing data was pearson product moment it was eased by using SPSS 22 program. Based on the data analysis, the writer concluded that there is a correlation between students’ self-anxiety and their speaking performance at the eleventh grade of Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. It was considered from Sig.(2-tailed)=0.000 that was smaller than α(0.05). It means that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. The value of correlation coefficient (r) is -0.799. From the research findings, it showed that there is a significant negative correlation between students’ self-anxiety and their speaking performance at the eleventh grade of Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru.
