Abstract

This research was conducted based on the problems faced by the students in learning English especially in reading. The problems were; most of the students are grueling to recognize the topic, most of the students are difficult to accept the new topic, most of the students are difficult to grasp the content of the topic, most of the students are lack of comprehension about the topic, and most of the students are difficult to make the inference what they read about. So, the writer was interested in carrying out the research about these problems. In this case, the writer correlated students’ prior knowledge and their reading interest. The objectives of the research were: to find out the information about the students’ prior knowledge, to find out the information about the students’ reading interest, and to find out the significant correlation between students’ prior knowledge and reading interest at Senior High School 3 Pekanbaru. In this research, the research design was correlation explementory research. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students at State Senior High School 3 Pekanbaru in 2015/2016. It consisted of 10 classes; the number of population was 350 students. Because the number of population was big, the writer used cluster sampling by random selection of naturally occurring groups or areas and then the selection of individual elements from the chosen groups or areas. As the result, the writer took XI. IPA 1. So the total number of the sample was 35 students. To analyze the data, the writer adopted product moment correlation by using SPSS16 software. Finally, based on the data analysis, the writer concluded that there was a significant positive correlation between students’ prior knowledge and their reading interest at Senior High School 3 Pekanbaru. The value of correlation coefficient 0.736 is bigger than 0,349 at 5% level of significant and 0,449 at 1% level of significant. In conclusion, the higher students’ prior knowledge, the higher their reading interest is and the lower students’ prior knowledge, the lower students’ reading interest will be.
