Abstract
Based on the researcher’s preliminary study, it was found that eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 10 Tapung Kampar Regency got difficulties on their reading comprehension of recount text such as analyze the main idea, factual information, meaning of vocabulary, purpose, and generic structure. This research aimed at finding out the effect of using Point-Counterpoint strategy on students’ reading comprehension of recount text at SMP Negeri 10 Tapung Kampar Regency. The design of this research was quasi-experimental. Therefore, this research used two groups; control group and experimental group. The subject of this research was eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 10 Tapung Kampar Regency. The object of this research was the effect of using Point-Counterpoint strategy and their reading comprehension of recount. In this research, 48 students from 135 students were chosen as samples by using cluster random sampling. To analyze the data, the writer used independent sample t-test by using SPSS 23 version and effect size formula. Based on the data analysis, it was proved by finding effect size which was 0.17. It was categorized in to large effect. It means that there is a significant effect of using Point-Counterpoint strategy on students’ reading comprehension of recount text at SMP Negeri 10 Tapung Kampar Regency.
