Abstract

This research was conducted based on the problems faced by the students in learning English especially in writing narrative paragraph. Based on the preliminary research, it was found that students’ ability in writing narrative paragraph was low such as unable to develop their ideas, unable to write the structure organization, unable to choose the appropriate words, some students have lack of vocabulary, and unable to write in suitable tense so that this research aimed at finding out the effect of using Action-Feelings-Setting strategy on students’ ability in writing narrative paragraph at Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. This research was a quasi-experimental research. Therefore, this research used two classes; control class and experimental class. The subject of the research was the tenth grade students of Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. The object of this research was Action-Feelings-Setting strategy and their writing ability on narrative paragraph. The sample of this research used cluster random sampling. There were 40 students as sample from 134 students. To analyze the data, the researcher used independent sample t-test by using SPSS 16 version and effect size formula by Julie Pallant. Based on the data analysis, the researcher found that the result of effect size formula was 0.68. It was categorized into large effect. It means that there was a significant effect of using Action-Feelings-Setting strategy on students’ ability in writing narrative paragraph at Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru.
