Abstract

This research was a correlational study. It was conducted to find out the correlation between students’ lexical coverage and their reading comprehension of narrative text at Junior High School 35 Pekanbaru. The population of this research was 232 students of eighth grade in Junior High School 35 Pekanbaru. The writer used simple random sampling technique to take the sample. Thus, the writer took 38 students as the sample of this research. In collecting the data, the writer used test to measure students’ lexical coverage and multiple choice questions to measure the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text. The writer analyzed the data by using Pearson Product Moment Formula of SPSS 23 version. Based on the result, it was found that the mean score of students’ lexical coverage was 91.46 or in lower threshold. While, their reading comprehension of narrative text was 71.16 or in enough level. In term of correlation between students’ lexical coverage and their reading comprehension of narrative text, the writer found that sig. (2-tailed) < α = 0.000 < 0.005. Thus, the writer concludes that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. Moreover, the writer found that the value of correlation coefficient was 0.731, which indicated that there was a strong correlation between the two variables. Based on the writer findings, it could be concluded that there is a significant correlation between students’ lexical coverage and their reading comprehension of narrative text at Junior High School 35 Pekanbaru.
