Abstract

This study aims to investigate the strongest factors that affecting students’ speaking performance and the strategy that students used to encounter their problems in speaking performance. This research is focusing solely on three affective factors which are motivation, self-esteem, and anxiety of eleventh grade students’ of Islamic Senior High School 1 Pekanbaru. Mix method research was used to find out those factors, which are the questionnaire and interview are administered to collect the data. The researcher took forty nine students as a sample of 319 students to obtain the strongest factor that affect students’ speaking performance. Then, the researcher took six students to be interviewed to know the strategy that students use to encounter their problem in speaking performance. The results of data analysis show that motivation was the strongest factor that affecting students’ speaking performance. The results also show that there are five strategies that students used to encounter their problem in speaking performance, which include; preparation, avoiding eye contact, positive thinking, keeping silent and join the extra class.
