Abstract

This research aims at investigating the effect of Using Hand Signals Strategy in teaching reading comprehension at the second year of state Junior High School 9 Tualang. It has three formulations of the problems that focus on finding out about (1) the levels of students’ reading comprehension of recount text taught by using Hand Signals Strategy (2) the levels of the students’ reading comprehension of recount text taught without using Hand Signals Strategy (3) whether there is a significant effect of using Hand Signals Strategy on students’ reading comprehension at the second year of State Junior High School 9 Tualang. The type of this research was Quasi-experimental research design. The subject of this research was the second year students at Junior High School 9 Tualang in academic years 2017-2018. The total number of population was 116 students. The Total sample of this research was 46 students of VIII 4 and VIII 5. To analyze the data, the researcher adopted Independent Sample t-test by using SPSS version 20. Based on the analysis data, the researcher found that the level of the students taught by Hand Signals Strategy categorized into good level, and the level of the students taught without using Hand Signals Strategy categorized into enough level. In analyzing Independent sample t-test the researcher found that sig (2tailed) < 0.05 that was 0.016. Thus, the researcher concluded that null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. In other words, there is a significant effect of using Hand Signals Strategy on students’ reading comprehension at the Second Year of State Junior High School 9 Tualang. Besides, the researcher calculated the effect size of this strategy and the result was 0.10 and it is categorized into moderate size. Key Words: Strategy, Hand Signals, Reading Comprehension
