Abstract

Emotional intelligence is one of the internal factors that influences the learning process. To determine the extent to which has achieved the required learning objectives, the purpose of this study was to determine the correlation ofemotional intelligence and English learning achievement. Emotional intelligencis the ability to control emotions, identify emotions, manage emotions, utilize emotions, recognize the emotions of others and build relationships with otherpeople. Learning achievement is the result of learning activity conducted based on the measurement and assessment of learning activities in the field of academic which is manifested in the numbers in the report card. This research is quantitative. The instruments used were a questionnaire and documentation of students learning achievement. The sample of this research was 30% from the total population of the first grade students with the total number of 180students.Then, in determining the sample, the researcher used simple randomsampling technique. The total number of the sample was 60 students. Theresearcher used pearson product moment correlation coefficient. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 17.0 program.Descriptive analysis was used to know students’ emotional intelligence and their English learning achievement. WhereaPearson Product Moment Correlation Technique was used in order to measure the correlation between the two variables which quantified the strength as well as direction of the correlation.Based on the data analysis, it showed that sig.t = .012.It was smaller than 0.05 (sig.≤ 0.05). It can be concluded that Ha (alternativehypothesis) was accepted. In other words, there is a significant correlationbetween students’ emotional intelligence and their English learning achievementat Junior High School 2 Ujungbatu. Key words : emotional intelligence, English learning achievement, and correlation.
