Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the effectiveness of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) on student reading comprehension at Junior High School 32 Pekanbaru. Quantitative method was used in this research with pre-experimental design (one-group pretest-posttest design). The sample of this research were 30 the eighth-grade students of class 4 selected with random sampling technique. The instrument used was multiple-choice test focusing on narrative text. The pretest was given before the treatment, while the posttest was given after students were taught by using CSR strategy including four stages-Preview, Click and Clunk, Get the Gist, and Wrap Up. The data were analyzed by using Paired Sample T-Test with SPSS. The research findings showed an increase in the mean score from 60.50 (pretest) to 83.50 (posttest). The statistical test results showed that the score of significance was 0.000 (p<0.05), so there was a significant effect between the pretest and posttest results. Therefore, it could be concluded that the use of CSR strategy was effective in increasing student reading comprehension.
