Abstract

This community service program titled “The Application of Appropriate Technology for Livestock Empowerment to Enhance Knowledge in Cattle Barn Management and Feed Processing” was conducted to address key challenges faced by cattle farmers in Kampung Merempan Hulu, Siak Regency, Riau Province. The primary objective was to increase farmers’ knowledge and skills in efficient barn management and innovative feed processing techniques to improve cattle productivity and economic sustainability. The program implemented a participatory and educational approach involving farmers from the Lembu Sejahtera Group. Activities included site surveys, workshops, and hands-on training focused on barn hygiene, ventilation, and waste management. The training emphasized low-cost feed processing technologies, such as silage and fermented feed, utilizing local agricultural waste. Farmers were also introduced to Integrated Eco-Farming practices to optimize resource use and reduce reliance on commercial feeds. Key findings from the program indicated significant improvements in farmers’ understanding of barn management and feed efficiency. Farmers demonstrated an ability to apply silage-making techniques and utilize composting methods for sustainable waste management. Infrastructure improvements, such as access to a compost storage facility provided by Bank Indonesia, further supported these efforts. Despite these successes, challenges remain, including limited access to raw materials for feed additives and inadequate infrastructure. Recommendations include continued technical support, expanded access to resources, and collaborative efforts with local government and educational institutions.This program highlights the importance of applying appropriate technology in empowering farmers, improving livestock productivity, and promoting sustainable farming practices. It serves as a model for similar community engagement initiatives to strengthen local agricultural and economic resilience.
