Abstract
Based on the school based curriculum, the purpose of studying English in Senior High School is that the students are able to access the knowledge by using the language ability. MA Al-Qasimiyah Sorek Satu Pelalawan is one of the schools that also implies the School Based Curriculum as its guidance in teaching and learning process. After doing observations at MA Al-Qasimiyah Sorek Satu Pelalawan, the researcher found some problems. They were: some of the students were fear of making mistakes while they were speaking in front of the class, some of them were nervous facing the English test, some of them were difficult to concentrate while they were learning English, some of them did not enjoy in learning English, some of them felt anxious in learning English and some of them still have score under the minimum standard curriculum of English lesson The objectives of the research were to find out the students’ anxiety of the first year at MA Al-Qasimiyah Sorek Satu Pelalawan, to find out students’ achievement in learning English of the first year at MA Al-Qasimiyah Sorek Satu Pelalawan, and to find out whether there is a significantly positive or negative correlation between students’ anxiety and their achievement in learning English of the first year students at MA Al-Qasimiyah Sorek Satu Pelalawan or not. The population of this research was the first year students of MA AlQasimiyah Sorek Satu Pelalawan. There were two classes of the first year students, class 1A (18 students) and class 1B (20 students), so the number of population was 38 students. Then the writer took all of population as the respondents. The technique of collecting the data was questionnaire and documentation. The technique of data analysis used Pearson product moment correlation coefficient by using SPSS 16.0 program in order to find out whether or not there was a significantly negative correlation between students’ anxiety and their achievement in learning English of the first year students at MA AlQasimiyah Sorek Satu Pelalawan . Based on the data analysis, it was found that ro 0.755 was higher than rtable at level 5% (0.329) and level 1 % (0.424). In conclusion, null hypothesis(Ho) was rejected and Hypothesis alternative (Ha) was accepted. In other words, there is a significantly negative correlation between students’ anxiety and their achievement in learning English of the first year at MA Al-Qasimiyah Sorek Satu Pelalawan.
