Abstract
Free range grazing system uses a forage cropping pattern that is intended to provide feed throughout the year. Peatlands are an alternative provider of animal feed. The research objectives were to identify the botanical composition, estimate biomass production and evaluate differences in the level of palatability and performance of native chickens that were given additional feed with peatland vegetation. The variables observed in the study were the botanical composition, biomass production and palatability and performance tests of native chickens. Primary data obtained from the field and laboratory were analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2007 software, to obtain the mean and standard deviation and interpreted descriptively. The botanical composition of peatlands has various types of vegetation. Vegetation on GRP land was dominated by ferns / kalakai (62.55%), kerisan (25.05%) and green fern (8.65%). Meanwhile, the Teaching Farm (GTF) peatlands were dominated by paitan (43.17%), fern (25.78%) and kerisan (7.89%) types of vegetation. The highest per-rotation (30 days) of biomass was on untapped peatlands, with a production of 2717.55 kg / ha based on dry matter production and 222.84 kg / ha based on crude protein. As well as for poultry pasture, an adult chicken needs an area of 0.33 m2 / head based on dry matter production and 2.31 m2 / head based on crude protein. The level of palatability of peatland forage has an inversely correlation with the performance of native chickens. It can be seen from the high consumption of ferns but low body weight gain and high (poor) feed conversion rates. Keywords : Free range system, peat land, botanical composition, biomass production and palatability and performance tests
