Abstract

ABSTRACT Dian Hervi Novita, (2019) : An Analysis of Students’ Difficulties in Comprehending Narrative Text at Senior High School 8 Mandau. Based on the researcher’s preliminary research, it was found that some of the first grade students at Senior High School 8 Mandau have been taught about narrative text but still got difficulties in reading narrative text. The researcher formulated the problems into two research questions, 1) what are the difficulties in reading narrative text? 2) What factors cause the difficulties in reading narrative text? Therefore, the objectives of this research were to find out the students’ difficulties in reading narrative text, and to find out the factors that cause the students’ difficulties in reading narrative t ext. This study was a descriptive research. The subject of this research was the first grade students of Senior High School 8 Mandau while the object of this research was students’ difficulties in reading narrative text. The researcher used Simple Random Sampling technique to take the sample; there were 35 students as sample from 138 students. To collect the data, the researcher used test and questionnaire. The test was conducted to find difficulties in reading narrative text. The questionnaire was used to find out the factors that cause the students’ difficulties in reading narrative text. Based on data analysis, the researcher found that the highest difficulty in reading narrative text was identifying generic structure. The percentage of students who were not able to identify generic structure of narrative text was 54.28% and the researcher found that the highest factors that cause difficulties in reading narrative text was difficulty level of the text (reliability). The percentage of students’ difficulties in reading narrative text in terms of level of the text (reliability) was 75.14%.
