Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of using mind mapping technique instruction on students’ reading comprehension and reading interest. The design of the study was quasi-experiment with two intact groups respectively the experimental group of 25 students and the control group of 26 students of eleventh grade of SMKN 1 Bangkinang Kota. During the study, the students in both groups were given a pretest and a posttest of 30 questions on reading comprehension and a Likert-type questionnaire of 20 items for the participants to complete to know their reading interest. The mind mapping and non-mind mapping techniques-based teaching were separately treated to both experimental and the control groups accordingly. The quantitative data of the pre-test and posttest on reading comprehension and reading interest were analyzed by using SPSS 20. The research findings showed that there was a significant difference of the pre-test and post-test of the students’ reading comprehension of the experimental group at the level of significance (p = 0.000). The eta-squared calculation revealed that there was an improvement on their reading comprehension by 73%. Based on the data analysis of the students’ reading interest, the t-test result was -4.847, its df was 24, and the probability was 0.000 (p< 0.05). Thus, there was also a significant difference of the students’ reading interest between the prequestionnaire and post-questionnaire mean scores of the experimental group. The eta-squared also showed an improvement by 49%. The findings of the study provided the evidence that the treatment was effective to improve the students’ reading comprehension and to increase the students’ reading interest. Keywords: mind mapping technique, reading comprehension, reading interest
