Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the effect of using Field Trip and Double Entry Diary strategies on 10th grade students’ writing ability at SMK Nurul Falah Pekanbaru. Based on preliminary observation at the school, it was found out that the students faced different kinds of difficulties in writing descriptive paragraph. The research design was a comparative experiment. The population was all students at grade ten at the school. The sample consisted of 20 students from Accounting 1 class as participants of experimental group 1 and 20 students from Accounting 2 class as participants of experimental group 2. To analyze the data, paired-samples t-test and independent t-test were calculated by using SPSS statistics. The data analysis showed that there was a significant effect of writing descriptive text after the use of Field Trip strategy where To was greater than Tt with the d.f. of 38 at significant levels of 5% and 1% (2.06 <9.21> 2.71). Then, the sig. (2-tailed )or probability value was less than 0.05 (0.000 <0.05). It means Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. The percentage of the significant difference between the pre-test and the post-test of the experimental classes could be seen from the effect size or eta-squared, in which the students’ writing ability in the experimental group 1 increased by 81%. There was also a significant effect of using Double Entry Diary strategy on the students’ ability in writing descriptive text in the experimental group 2. The To was greater than Tt with d.f. of 38 at significant levels of 5% and 1% (2.06 <7.72> 2.71). Besides, the sig. (2-tailed)or probability value was less than 0.05 (0.000 <0.05). It means Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. The percentage of the significant difference between the pre-test and the post-test of the experimental classes could be seen from the effect size or eta-squared, in which the students’ writing ability in the experimental group 2 increased by 76%. In conclusion, the use of Field Trip strategy was better than Double Entry Diary strategy. Keywords: Field Trip, Double Entry Diary, writing ability, descriptive text
