Abstract
This study was aimed at finding out the correlation between students’ vocabulary acquisition and their reading comprehension of narrative texts at tenth grade of Vocational High School KANSAI Pekanbaru. The specific objective of this research was to find out whether or not there was a significant correlation between students’ vocabulary acquisition and their reading comprehension of some kinds of narrativet texts. From 210 students of the population which consisted of 6 classes, the researcher took the all tenth grade students of Vocational High School KANSAI Pekanbaru as the sample. In collecting the data, the researcher used multiple choices to measure students’ understanding of vocabulary, and multiple choices test to measure the students’ reading comprehension of some kinds of narrative texts. The researcher analyzed the data by using Pearson Order Coefficient formula of SPSS Version 17.0 because the data were normally distributed. Based on the results, it was found that the mean of students’ vocabulary acquisition was 74.87(good level), while their reading comprehension of narrative texts was 76.79 (good level). In terms of the correlation between students’ vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension of narrative texts, the researcher found that sig. (2-tailed) < α = 0.000 < 0.05. Thus, the researcher concluded that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. Moreover, the researcher found that the value of Pearson Rho (ρ) was 0.336 which indicated that there was a strong correlation between the two variables. Based on the research findings, it could be concluded that there was a significant correlation between students’ vocabuary acquisition and their reading comprehension of narrative texts at tenth grade of Vocational High School KANSAI Pekanbaru Keywords : Students’ vocabulary acquisition, reading comprehension, and correlation.
