Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the correlation between students’ understanding of simple past tense and reading comprehension of recount texts at first grade of State Senior High School 1 Sentajo Raya. The specific objective of this research was to find out whether or not there was a significant correlation between students’ understanding of simple past tense and reading comprehension of some kinds of recount texts. From 94 students of the population which consisted of 4 classes, the researcher took the all first grade students of State Senior High School 1 Sentajo Raya as the sample. In collecting the data, the researcher used gap-filling-task to measure students’ understanding of simple past tense, and multiple choices test to measure the students’ reading comprehension of some kinds of recount text. The researcher analyzed the data by using Spearman Rank Order Coefficient formula of SPSS Version 20.0 because the data was not normally distributed. Based on the results, it was found that the mean of students’ understanding simple past tense was 70.33 (good level), while their reading comprehension of recount text was 66.11 (sufficient level). In terms of the correlation between students’ understanding of simple past tense and reading comprehension of recount texts, the researcher found that sig. (2-tailed) < α = 0.000 < 0.005. Thus, the researcher concluded that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. Moreover, the researcher found that the value of Spearman Rho (ρ) was 0.696 which indicated that there was a strong correlation between the two variables. Based on the research findings, it could be concluded that there was a significant correlation between students’ understanding of simple past tense and reading comprehension of recount texts at first grade of State Senior High School 1 Sentajo Raya.
