Abstract

This qualitative study was carried out to investigate the implementation of scientific approach by English teachers at SMA Cendana Pekanbaru. Furthermore, it was particularly intended to answer three research questions: 1) How is the teachers’ basic understanding of scientific approach in teaching English at SMA Cendana Pekanbaru? 2) How is the implementation of scientific approach in teaching English at SMA Cendana Pekanbaru? 3) What factors influence the implementation of scientific approach at SMA Cendana Pekanbaru? The participants were two English teachers. Data were generated from multiple sources such as conducting classroom observations, semi-structured interviews and documents. The data were later analyzed qualitatively to explore teachers’ understanding of scientific approach implementation in teaching English at SMA Cendana Pekanbaru and the influential factors of it. The result of the analysis concluded both teachers have good basic understanding of the scientific approach. However, in implementing the scientific approach, they were not at the same level. Among the five stages of the scientific approach, one of the teachers implemented them optimally while the other was not optimum during the observing and questioning stage. The teachers reported that the factors influence the implementation of scientific approach were about the contributing of in-service training toward scientific approach understanding and the availability of facilities and learning sources. Encouraging academic environment and teacher creativity has also been reported as another influential factors. The findings of this study provide the insights and recommendations for related authorities as well as establishing chances for the further research on the implementation of scientific approach in teaching English and other similar contexts.
