Abstract

The purpose of the research was to investigate the effect of implementing CALLA on students’ speaking and writing skills. The design of this research was mixed method research by using experimental and control group with pretest-posttest design. The participants of the research were 17 students of each experimental class and control class at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. Eight hypothesis were stated to find out the significant difference of the implementation of CALLA on students’ speaking and writing skills. Pretest and posttest were administered to the students and to analyze the data, the researcher adopted Independent sample T-test and Paired sample T-test formula by using SPSS 20. The contribution of CALLA strategy was significant in experimental class on students’ speaking skill by 69%, then, on students’ writing skill by 71%. Further, in control class it has significant improvement on students speaking skill by 32%, and on writing skill by 76%. In conclusion, this approach gives a significant improvement on students’ speaking and writing skills. Keyword: Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach (CALLA), speaking skill, writing skill.
