Abstract

This research was conducted based on some problems in learning English especially in term of reading comprehension in narrative text. The objectives of the research were to find out if there was a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text taught by using Small Group Discussion Strategy and taught without using Small Group Discussion Strategy at Islamic Junior High School Andalan Pekanbaru. The design of this research was Pre-Experimental Research. The population of this research was the second grade students. The total number of population was 310 students. The writer used cluster random sampling by selecting classes as a sample. VIII.9 consisted of 30 students as experimental and control class. The instrument of this research was the test which were consisted of pre-test and post-test. The test was about narrative text in which there were 20 items by using multiple-choice. In analyzing the data, the researcher used paired-sample ttest which was analyzed statistically by using software SPSS 17 version. In order to find out whether or not there was significant effect of using the Small Group Discussion strategy toward students’ reading comprehension in narrative text, the researcher provided the effect size or (Eta squared). Based on the result, it was found that, the result of eta squared was 0.87 ≥ 0.14 that was categorized into large effect. It means, Ho2 is rejected while Ha2 is accepted. In conclusion, there was significant effect of using Small Group Discussion Strategy at Islamic Junior High School Andalan Pekanbaru. Keywords: Small Group Discussion Strategy, Reading Comprehension
