Abstract

This research was aimed to know which strategy (Crossword Puzzle Game or Thematic Dominoes Game) could improve students' vocabulary mastery at State Junior High School 2 Sinaboi of Rokan Hilir Regency. The study used a quasiexperimental, non-controlled approach with quantitative research. The sample of this study involved 50 first grade students of State Junior High School 2 Sinaboi, Rokan Hilir Regency using cluster sampling technique. The Crossword Puzzle Game was applied to the experiment class 1 (class VII A) consisting of 25 students and Thematic Dominoes Game was employed to the experiment class 2 (class VII B) consisting of 25 students. The data were collected using a pre-test and a post-test. The quantitative data were analyzed by using inferential statistics (independent sample ttest and paired sample t-test) and descriptive. The findings showed that there was no significant differences of students' vocabulary mastery between the experimental class 1 using Crossword Puzzle Game (gained score = 29.44 and standard deviation = 7.107) and the experiment 2 class using Thematic Dominoes Game (average = 33.28 and standard deviation = 8.463) where the index t = -1.713 with the value of sig (2tailed) = 0.89 greater than 0.05 (p < 0.05). Therefore, null hypothesis was accepted and alternate hypothesis was rejected. This means that Crossword Puzzle Game strategy and the Thematic Dominoes Game strategy could increase the students’ vocabulary, but when viewed from the scores of both strategies Thematic Dominoes Games (gained score = 33.28) gave better results compared to Crossword Puzzle Game (gained score = 29.44).
