Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to compare which strategy is better between PLAN strategy and SMART strategy on students' ability in understanding descriptive text. The design of this study was an experimental research nonequivalent without control group that focused on quantitative research. The subject of this research was the students of class XII IPA in odd semester at State Senior High School 11 Pekanbaru in the academic year of 2017/2018. The sample collection technique of this study was cluster sampling, which were 2 classes with a total of 62 students consisting of experimental group 1 and 2. Pre-test and posttest were given to both experimental groups. Independent sample t-test and paired sample t-test were used to analyze the data in this study. The results showed that the result of sig (2-tail) was 0.374, df 60, Gain scores of X1 was 16.12 and X2 was 18.83. Therefore, the null hypothesis was accepted and the alternative hypothesis was rejected. The comparison of the post-test scores between the PLAN strategy and the SMART strategy did not differ significantly. Both groups were equally improved, but when viewed from the results of the Gain score of both strategies, it could be concluded that the use of SMART strategy gave better results compared to the use of PLAN strategy.
