Abstract

Based on the researcher’s preliminary research, it was found that some of tenth grade students at State Senior High School 5 Pekanbaru had difficulties in reading comprehension. The difficulties were noticed in the percentage of their response in answering questionnaires. The main focus of this research is to find out the difficulties of the students in reading comprehension of narrative text at tenth grade of state senior high school 5 Pekanbaru and the factors that make students difficult in reading comprehension of narrative text. This descriptive quantitativeresearch had one variable, Students’ Difficulties in Reading Comprehension of Narrative Text. The subject of this research is the tenth grade students at State Senior High School 5 Pekanbaru. The researcher selected all classes from total 11 classes by using simple random sampling technique. There are 40 students as sample out of 393 students. In collecting the data, the researcherhas distributed questionnaires. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that the students mostly have difficulties in reading comprehension in identifying the factual information (21.97%), the second is to identify in making inference (21.85%), the third is to find out the main idea (19.55%), the fourth is to identify the generic structures (18.37%), and last is to identify the language features (18.26%). The factor of these difficulties are; the first, students have lack of fluency (14.92%), second, the students have problems in recalling information (13.22%), and the third, the students have the level of the text (readability) (13.09%). The researcherconcluded that there are some factors that caused students difficult in answering reading comprehension questions in narrative text at State Senior High School 5 Pekanbaru.
