Abstract
This research was conducted based on the problems faced by the students in learning English especially in speaking.The research has aimed at finding out how the students’ speaking ability before using stand up hand up and pair up strategy is, how the students’ speaking ability after using stand up hand up and pair up strategy is, and whether there is a significant difference of using stand up hand up and pair up strategy at the second year of SMPN 1 Siak Hulu.This research was an experimental research with one-group pretest-posttest design. The writer chose one class as an experimental class. The class consisted of 36 students. Before giving treatment, the group was given pre-test and after giving treatment they were given post test. It was the group which was treated with stand up hand up and pair up strategy. Then, the data were analyzed by using paired sample t-test through SPSS version 17.The writer found that the mean of post test showed 74.98 which was higher than the mean of the pretest 65.4. Furthermore, the result of statistical analysis in the research showed that the overall significance was .000 whichwas less than the alpha value 0.05. It means that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. Finally, based on the data analysis, the writer concluded that there is a significant effect of using stand up hand up and pair up strategy on students’ speaking ability at the second year of SMPN 1 Siak Hulu.
