Abstract

This research was a correlational study. It aimed at finding out the correlation between students’ summary writing ability and their reading comprehension. There were two variables used in this research, which were X variable (students’ summary writing ability) and Y variable (students’ reading comprehension). The subject of this research was the eleventh grade students at Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru whereas the object of this research was the correlation between summary writing ability and reading comprehension. The population of this research was 175 students. The researcher took 20% as sample, therefore, total number of sample is 35 students. In order to determine the sample, the researcher used simple random sampling technique. In collecting the data, the researcher used summary writing test for summary writing ability and multiple choice test for reading comprehension. In this research, the data were analyzed by using Pearson product moment correlation coefficient through SPSS 21.0. The result of this research showed that sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.000. It can be stated that 0.000 < 0.05. It means that null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected while the alternative hypothesis (Hα) is accepted. The value of correlation coefficient (r) was 0.634. In conclusion, there is a significant positive correlation between students’ summary writing ability and their reading comprehension. The researcher also found that 40.2% of summary writing could influence reading comprehension. It means that the students with positive summary writing ability get better reading comprehension than the negative one. Key Words: Correlation, Summary Writing Ability, Reading Comprehension.
