Abstract

Based on the preliminary research at the Second Grade Students of SMPN 1 Siak Hulu, the writer found that the students could not comprehend the meaning of texts in their text books at the school. This problem was caused by some factors. Example, some of the students could not understand about the content of reading text and identify the information of the text. So, the writer was interested in carrying out the research about this problem. The research was administered at SMPN 1 Siak Hulu. The subject of this research was the second grade students at SMPN 1 Siak Hulu, and the object of this research was using paired summarizing technique toward reading comprehension on descriptive text. The design of this research was quasi experiment design. The population of this research was the second grade students of SMPN 1 Siak Hulu in 2012-2013 academic year, in which they were divided into nine classes. The number of the students was 270 students. Because the number of population was large, the writer used cluster sampling by taking two classes only as sample; VIII E consisted of 30 students as an experimental class, and VIII.D consisted of 30 students as a control class, so the numbers of sample from two classes were 60 students. To analyze the data, the writer adopted a paired sample T-test formula by using SPSS. After analyzing the data, the writer found that there was significant effect of using paired summarizing technique toward reading comprehension on descriptive text of the second grade students at SMPN 1 Siak Hulu, it can be seen from the result of T-test is 7.585. It is bigger than standard on the critic table of the T-test that is 2.80 in 1% or 2.06 in 5%, it can be read 2.06<7.585>2.80. Based on the result above, Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected.
