Abstract

Based on the writer’s preliminary observation, it was found that some of the students were not able to collect their ideas in writing narrative paragraph, some of the students were not able to write the generic structures of narrative paragraph, some of the students were not able to use correct grammatical order in writing narrative paragraph, some of the students do not have enough vocabulary to develop their ideas while writing, some of the students were difficult to choose vocabulary appropriately in writing narrative paragraph, some of the students were not able to write English spelling correctly.So, the writer was interested in carrying out the research about this problem. The research was administered at MA Muhammadiyah Pekanbaru. The subject was the first year students of MA Muhammadiyah Pekanbaru, and the object of this research was the effect of using Timed Writing ChecklistStrategy towards Students’ Writing Ability on Narrative Paragraphs. The design of this research was Pre-Experimental Research. The population of this research was the first year students. The number of population was 30 students. They were in one class; X1, this class consisted of 30 students. Because the number of population was small, the writer used total population sampling, deciding class X1 as an experimental class. To analyze the data, the writer adopted Paired sample t-test formula by using software SPSS 16. After analyzing the data, the writer found that there is a significant effect of using Timed Writing Checklist strategy towards students’Writing Ability on Narrative Paragraphs at the first year of MA Muhammadiyah Pekanbaru, where T shows 9.109, at significant level of 5% it shows 2.04, and at level of 1% it shows 2.76. We can read 2.04<9.109>2.76. It means null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. In other words, there is a significant effect of using Timed Writing Checklist strategy towards students’ Writing Ability on Narrative Paragraphs at the first year of MA Muhammadiyah Pekanbaru.
