Abstract
Based on the writer’s preliminary study, it was found that the students could not comprehend the meaning of the text in their text book at the school. This problem was caused by some factors. For example, some of the students had difficulties in finding the topic from reading text and analyzing the reading text. So, the writer was interested in carrying out the research for this problem. In this case, the teacher was expected to find a good strategy to improve the students' reading comprehension by applying “Open House strategy” as a replacement of previous strategy. The objectives of this research were to find out the information and data about students’ reading comprehension taught by using open house strategy, to find out the information and data about students’ reading comprehension taught without using open house strategy, and to find out if there is a significant difference of using open house strategy toward reading comprehension of the eighth grade students at State Junior High School 2 Meral Karimun Regency. In this research, the type of research used was a quasi experimental research. The writer took non equivalent control group design. The writer used two classes as sample that consisted of 50 students. Before giving the treatment, the students were given pre-tests. Post-tests were given after the treatment. The technique of collecting data was the test. The test was used in order to find out the students’ reading comprehension of the eighth grade at State Junior High School 2 Meral Karimun Regency. The technique of data analysis was Independent Sample Test in order to find out the difference between gain of post-test in experimental class and gain of post-test in control class by using SPSS 16 Version. Based on the data analysis, the writer had concluded that there was a significant effect of using Open House strategy toward students’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of State Junior High School 2 Meral Karimun Regency by considering Tcalculated= 4.074 is higher than Ttable in significance level of 5% = 2.01 and in 1%= 2.68. It can be seen that 2.01<4.074>2.68. It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected.
