Abstract

This research was entitled “A Comparison between Using Authentic and Non-authentic Materials on Reading Motivation of the Students at State Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru”. The research had 3 formulations of the problems; how students’ reading motivation taught by using Authentic materials at State Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru was, how students’ reading motivation taught by using Non-authentic materials at State Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru was, and whether there was or no significant difference of reading motivation between the students who were taught by using authentic and non-authentic of the eleventh grade at State Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru. The object of the research was to find out whether there was any significant difference of reading motivation between the students who were taught by using authentic and non-authentic materials of the eleventh grade students at State Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru. In this research, the research design was a causal-comparative research. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students at State Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru in 2013/2014 academic year. It consisted of seven classes; 4 classes are for science department and 3 classes for social department. The target population was the eleventh grade students of science department. The sample of this research was 62 students (XI IPA 2 was 31 students and XI IPA 4 was 31 students). They were XI IPA 2 as the authentic materials class and XI IPA 4 as the non-authentic materials class. The technique of collecting data used by the researcher was questionnaire. The technique of analyzing data was an independent sample t-test and it was facilitated by using SPSS 16.0 program. Based on the data analysis, the researcher concluded that there was a significant difference of reading motivation between the students who were taught by using Authentic and Non-authentic materials of the eleventh grade students at State Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru. It was considered from t-obtained = 9.695 that was higher than t-table either at 5% = 2.00 or 1% = 2.65. It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. From the research finding, it showed that there was a significant difference of reading motivation between the students who were taught by using authentic materials and non-authentic materials of the eleventh grade at State Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru.
