Abstract

This research was aimed to compare the effect of usingConcept Maps Strategy and Anticipation GuideStrategy on students’ reading comprehension. The population was 160 eleventh grade students of State Senior High School 1 (SMA Negeri 1 )Siak Hulu in the academic year 2016/2017 which consisted of five classes.Three of the five classes were chosen as the samples of the research by using cluster sampling technique. Thus, the total the sample was 96 students. It was a quasi-experimental design with quantitative method. To collect the data, an observation and a reading comprehension test wereused. The reading comprehension test was administered in two stages (a pre-test and a post-test ),to the experimental class 1, the experimental class 2, and the control class. The finding of the research provided the evidence that wasthere was a significant difference of the post-test reading comprehension between those who were taught using the Concept Maps Strategy and those who were taught using the Anticipation Guide Strategy. The Finding of the research also proved that the post-test mean score of the Concept Maps Strategy was higher than the post-test mean score of the Anticipation Guide Strategy. Thus, the Concept Maps Strategy could give more significant improvement to the students’ reading comprehension compared to the Anticipation Guide Strategy
