Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR ) and Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text (GIST )on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text. It was conducted at SMPN 27 Pekanbaru. The subject of this study was the second year students. The study was done through a quasi-experimental research design. This research used cluster sampling, which three classes were taken as sample; with total number 108 participants. To analyze the data, paired sample t-test and independent sample ttest were calculated by using SPSS version 20. Based on the results of the data analysis, it could be concluded that there was a significant effect of using CSR on the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text. The effect size or etasquared; as a result, the students in the experimental group 1 who used CSR strategy could improve their reading comprehension of narrative text by 62%. Besides, there was a significant effect of using GIST strategy on the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text in the experimental group 2. The etasquared results showed that the students in experimental group 2 could improve their reading comprehension of narrative text by 12%. In conclusion, the use of CSR strategy is better than the use of GIST strategy and the conventional strategy.
