Abstract

The aim of the study was to find out the comparison between the effect of using Story Map Strategy and Two Column-Notes Strategy on students’ reading comprehension at Islamic Junior High School Darel Hikmah Pekanbaru. The study used quasi-experimental non-equivalent approach (pre-test and post-test ) and control group. The sample of this study was 84 students of the second grade of Islamic Junior High School Darel Hikmah Pekanbaru. The Story Map Strategy was used in the experiment class 1 (n=28 ) while the Two Column-Notes Strategy was used in the experimental class 2 (n=28), whereas the control class (n=28) was taught using the conventional method. The data were collected by using a pretest and a post-test on reading. The quantitative data were analyzed by using Inferential and Descriptive Statistics. The findings of the study showed that there was no significant difference of students' reading comprehension between the experimental class 1 (average = 73.29 and standard deviation = 8.02 ) and the experimental class 2 (average = 70.54 and standard deviation = 8.65 ) where t = 1.233 with p = 0.223> 0.05. To find out the effectiveness of these two strategies, eta squared formula was employed. The results of the data analysis indicated that the students’ reading comprehension using the Story Map Strategy was categorized into medium effect and the Two ColumnNotes Strategy was also categorized into medium effect. So, it could be concluded that the Story Map Strategy could provide students with a more significant improvement on their reading comprehension compared to the Two Column-Notes Strategy.
