Abstract
Based on the researcher’s preliminary research, it was found that some of the tenth grade students at State Senior High School Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru have been taught about descriptive paragraph but still get difficulties and make errors in writing descriptive paragraph. Therefore, the objectives of this research were to find out the kinds of grammatical errors commonly made by the students in writing descriptive paragraph. The errors collected were classified based on Dulay’s theory. This study was a qualitative research. The subject of this research was the tenth grade students of State Senior High School Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru, while the object of this research was grammatical errors in writing descriptive paragraph. The researcher used purposive sampling technique to take the sample, there were 31 students as sample from 77 students. To collect the data, the researcher used a test. Based on the data analysis, the researcher found that four types of grammatical errors that students made in writing descriptive paragraph. The total amounts of errors made by students were 634 errors. The percentage of Omission in writing descriptive paragraph was 10.4%, Addition was 16.1%, Misformation was 47.6% and Misordering was 25.9%. The highest percentage of students’ errors was in misformation (47.6%) and the lowest percentage was in omission (10.4%). From the result, it can be concluded that the students still get difficulties and make errors in writing descriptive paragraph. Key words: Error, Writing, Descriptive Paragraph.
