Abstract

Based on researcher’s preliminary research, there were some problems faced by students of eighth grade at State Junior High School 2 Kampar Kiri in learning English especially in reading narrative text. The problems are some of students have difficulties in identifying the main idea, detail information, generic structure, communicative purpose, and reference. So, the researcher was interested in carrying out the research about these problems by using STAD (Student Team Achievement Division) method to improve students’ reading comprehension. The purpose of this research was to determine whether there is influence in using STAD (Student Team Achievement Division) on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text. Type of this research was quasi experimental design. In this research, the researcher used a pre-test and post-test to collect the data. Then, the researcher used the formula of independent sample t-test by using SPSS 23 for analyzing the data. After analyzing the data by using SPSS 23, the researcher found that t-test was 4.107 and the significance was 0.000<0.05. It means that Ho was rejected, while Ha was accepted. Meanwhile, to find how large the magnitude effect of using STAD (Student Team Achievement Division) method is, the researcher used eta squared (effect size) formula. The researcher found eta squared was 0.307, it was categorized into large effect. In conclusion, there is a significant effect of using STAD (Student Team Achievement Division) method on students’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of State Junior High School 2 Kampar Kiri.
