Abstract

In this research the students still had problems in learning reading, For example, the students had difficulties to find out main idea of narrative text, the students had difficulties to determine the generic structure of narrative text, the students could not determine the language feature of narrative text. The objective of this research was to know whether or not there is a significant difference between using PQRS strategy and conventional strategy on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text at the eight grade of SMPN 30 Pekanbaru. The design of this research was a quasi experimental design. The population of this research was the students of the eight grade at SMPN 30 Pekanbaru in 2016-2017 academic years. The total number of population was 245 students. The sample was taken by using cluster random sampling. The sample was class VIII 1 that consisted of 32 students as experimental group, and class VIII 7 consisted of 32 students as control group. So, the number of sample from two classes was 64 students. To analyze the data, the researcher used independent sample T-test formula by using SPSS 16 version and effect size formula. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that t0 > tt or 5.716 > 2.00. in conclusion, this research found that there is a significant difference between using PQRS and conventional strategy on reading comprehension on narrative text at the eight grade students of SMPN 30 Pekanbaru.
