Abstract

This research was conducted based on the problems faced by the students in learning English especially in reading short functional text. Based on the fact, the students have problems to comprehend the short functional text. In this case, the writer was interested in carrying out the research about these problems. The writer provided Read as Often as Possible Strategy to improve the students’ reading comprehension. This strategy can be used to improve the students’ reading comprehension or to help the students comprehend the text.The objectives of the research were to find out the students’ reading comprehension of short functional text taught by using read as Often as Possible strategy, to find out the students’ reading comprehension of short functional text taught without using this strategy and to find out whether there was a significant effect of using read as often as possible strategy on students’ reading comprehension of short functional text at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru. The design of this research was a quasi-experimental design. In collecting the data, the writer used both pre- and post- test to collect the data of the reading comprehension of short functional text of the first year students at the senior high school Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru. The population of this research was the all tenth grades that consisted of 163 students. Considering that population was large, the writer only took two classes be sample; X IPA 1 consisted of 28 students as control class, and X IPA 2 consisted 28 students as experiment class. So, the number of sample from two classes was 56 students. In analyzing the data, the writer used an independent sample t-test. By using SPSS 20.0 and analyzed it by comparing sig. 2-Tailed with 0.05. Finally, based on the analysis of T-test formula, the writer concluded that there isa significant effect of using Read as Often as Possible strategy on students’ reading comprehension of short functional text at the Senior High School Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru, where Sig.2-Tailed is 0.006 is smaller than 0.05, it means that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected.
