Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know whether there is any correlation betw~en stu~ents_' intrinsic motivation and their speaking ability at second year of !slamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. The sample of this research 15 30 female _stud~nts taken by using simple random sampling technique. ~e m~thod used m this research was a quantitative method and the technique used in t~is ~esearch was a correlational technique. In collecting the data. this researcher dist~ibu!ed questionnaires to the respondent to assess students' intrinsic m~tlv~t,~n consisting of 25 statements. The questionnaires based on the indicators of mtnnsic and extrinsic motivation which adopted from The Attitude/Motivation Test Batery (AMTB) by Gardner. Besides. in assessing students' speaking ability. the researcher conducted oral test to the students by retelling narrative story and the score was evaluated by two raters. The researcher used Pearson product moment correlation coefficient through SPSS 22.00 to analyze the data. The result of this research shows that sig. (2-tailed) value is 0.000. It can be stated that 0.000<0.05. It means that null hypothesis (H0) is rejected while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. The value of correlation coefficient (r) is 0.674. In conclusion, there is a significant positive correlation between students' motivation in learning speaking and their speaking ability. The researcher also found that 45%% of intrinsic motivation can influence speaking ability. It means that students with higher intrinsic motivation will get better speaking ability than the lower one. In other words, the higher intrinsically motivated students, the better speaking ability can be achieved. Key Word: Correlation, Intrinsic Motivation, Speaking Ability •
