Abstract

Based on theresearcher’s preliminary observation and information from the English teacher atVocational High School Muhammdiyah 2 Pekanbaru, it was found that some of the tenth-grade computer engineering students had problems in reading comprehension, especially in narrative text. They could not reach the passing grade (KKM).The main focus of this research was to find outwhether there was a significant effect between using and without using Self-Questioning Strategy on students’ reading comprehension at Vocational High School Muhammdiyah 2 Pekanbaru. The writer formulated the problems that would be answered by using the quantitativeresearch.This research had two variablesUsing Self-Questioning Strategyas an independent variable and students’ reading comprehension as a dependent variable.The type of research was a Quasiexperimental research.The subject of this research was the Tenth-Grade Computer Engineering at Vocational High School Muhammdiyah 2 Pekanbaru.The writer took two classes: experimental and control class. There were 58 students as sample from 88Tenth Grade Computer Engineering at Vocational High School Muhammdiyah 2 Pekanbaru. In collecting the data, the researcher used multiple choice tests. In analyzing the data, the researcher used an independent t-test formulaby using SPSS 16 version. Based on the analysis of T-test Formula, Ha is accepted because the sig. value is 0.001<0.50. The research was concluding that there is significant effect of using Self-Questioning Strategy on reading comprehensionof the Tenth Grade Computer Engineering at Vocational High School Muhammdiyah 2 Pekanbaru. .
