Abstract

Based on the researcher’s preliminary study, it was found that some of the students was difficult to comprehend the text. Most of them only read the text but they did not understand what they read. Therefore, the researcher was interested in carrying out research about this problem. The purpose of this reserach was to find out the whether there is a significant effect of using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) technique on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text at the second year students of State Senior High School 1 Kampar. The design of this research was an experimental research and used quasi experimental research. There were two classes as samples. Each class consisted of 35 students. Pre-test were administered before treatment and post-test was given after. The technique of collecting the data was test. It was used in order to find out students’ reading comprehension at the second year of State Senior High School 1 Kampar. Besides, The data was analyzed by using independent sample t-test calculated by SPSS 17 version and eta-square. The result was that there was a significant effect of using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) technique on students’ reading comprehension at the second year of SMAN 1 Kampar. The total score of t-test was 5.993. It was bigger than ttable = 2.00 (at significance level of 5%) and ttable = 2.65 (at significance level of 1%); 2.00 5.993 2.65. The result of Eta square was 0.346. It means the effect size has large effect. So, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) technique on students’ reading comprehension at the second year of SMAN 1 Kampar.
