Abstract

Based on the researcher preliminary research at state senior high school 2 Pekanbaru, it was found that some of the students still have difficulty in speaking English. It can be prove by looking at students speaking outcome which are still far from kkm, the kkm was 78. This research was conducted to find out the significant effect of throwing and catching the ball on speaking ability at the tenth grade at SMAN 2 Pekanbaru. This research was an experimental research. The design of this research was a Quasi-Experimental research non-equivalent control group design. The population of this research was all of the tenth grade students. The total number of the population was 280 students. Because the number of the population was big, the writer use cluster sampling technique by taking only two classes as sample; X IPA 1 consisted of 36 students as a control class and X IPA 2 consisted of 36 students as an experimental class. So, the number of the samples from two classes was 72 students. To analyzed the data, the researcher used independent sample t-test formula by using software SPSS 16. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that T showed 5.301 at the significance level of 5% it shows 1.99 and at the level of 1% it show 2.66 . Thus, null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted which shows 1.99 < 5.301 > 2.66. in conclusion, there is a significant effect of throwing and catching the ball on students speaking ability at the tenth grade of SMAN 2 Pekanbaru.
